The Neuroaid and Research Foundation (NRF) was invited to address the parents at Raisina Bengali Junior School, in Chittaranjan Park on 6 August, 2025. The Health and Heal Foundation, an NGO, working in close collaboration with NRF’s Center at DCMS took the initiative to host the program.
Dr Monika, HOD Occupational Therapy spoke at length to the parents about how parenting styles and home environment can affect the emotional development of a child. She cautioned against excessive use of mobile phones especially as a substitute for parents spending quality time with their children and outdoor activities. Other advises included:
- how to make a child feel like a family member and not a guest
- highlighting the importance of having a routine for the parent and child
- encouraging involvement of all members and especially the father in the daily activities of a child and the household
- having an open line of communication
- encouraging family outings on holidays and weekends were stressed.
Dr Monika also cautioned against a parent using verbal or physical aggression to discipline a child and playing the victim. Instead, she emphasized a problem-solving approach wherein the parent shows up as a person who may not know everything but is ready to look for solution. The lecture concluded on a positive note and with the message that if all the above strategies were not working, the parent should consult a professional to rule out any other causes of concern.
