NRF Provides Sports Physiotherapy Support at Ultimate Wheelchair Frisbee Tournament 2026

New Delhi, 9 August 2026: The Ultimate Wheelchair Frisbee Tournament, organized by Umoya Sports, was successfully held on 9 August 2026 at Ramjas International School, New Delhi. The tournament brought together 120 wheelchair athletes from Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), representing both men’s and women’s teams, in a celebration of inclusive, adaptive, and competitive sports.

The event was graced by Shri Anil Sharma Ji, Hon’ble MLA, Government of Delhi, who encouraged the participating athletes and acknowledged the importance of creating greater opportunities for persons with disabilities to participate in competitive sports.

The tournament concluded with Capital King emerging as the winners in the men’s category, while Super King secured the women’s title. Both teams demonstrated outstanding skill, teamwork, determination, and sporting spirit throughout the competition.

NRF’s Role in Sports Physiotherapy & Athlete Support

The Neuroaid & Research Foundation (NRF) provided dedicated sports physiotherapy and rehabilitation support throughout the tournament, with the objective of promoting athlete safety, physical preparedness, injury prevention, and timely management of sports-related concerns.

The physiotherapy team, headed by Dr. Sonal Sharma (PT), provided comprehensive support through both off-field preparation and on-field clinical services.

Off-Field Physiotherapy: Preparation, Prevention & Performance

Before and between competitive sessions, the NRF physiotherapy team conducted structured warm-up and physical preparation sessions designed specifically around the demands of wheelchair sports. These sessions focused

on preparing athletes for high-intensity competition while addressing the specific physical requirements of wheelchair users.

  • Dynamic warm-up and mobility exercises to prepare the musculoskeletal system for competition.
  • Upper-limb and trunk activation, considering the high physical demands placed on the shoulders, arms, and trunk during wheelchair propulsion and sport-specific movements.
  • Joint mobility and flexibility exercises to optimise movement and reduce musculoskeletal stress.
  • Muscle activation and neuromuscular preparation to improve physical readiness before competition.
  • Injury-prevention strategies addressing common areas of concern in wheelchair athletes, particularly the shoulder, wrist, elbow, neck, and back.
  • Individualized exercise guidance based on athletes’ functional requirements and presenting concerns.
  • Recovery and cooldown strategies following intense periods of play.

This preventive approach aimed to help athletes enter competition physically prepared, minimize avoidable musculoskeletal stress, and support sustained participation throughout the tournament.

  • On-Field Physiotherapy: Immediate Assessment & Clinical Management

The NRF team also provided on-field physiotherapy services throughout the tournament, ensuring that athletes had access to timely clinical support whenever required.

    • Immediate assessment of sports-related musculoskeletal pain and injuries.
    • Clinical screening to determine the severity and functional impact of an injury.
    • Appropriate first-line physiotherapy management during competition.
    • Management of acute musculoskeletal concerns to support safe continuation of play where clinically appropriate.
    • Taping, positioning, mobility, and supportive interventions when indicated.
    • Monitoring athletes for signs of physical overload, fatigue, or recurring musculoskeletal problems.
    • Providing guidance regarding rest, recovery, and further rehabilitation when an athlete required additional care.
    • Advising athletes and support personnel regarding safe participation and return-to-play considerations.

The presence of physiotherapists on the field provided athletes with an accessible point of clinical support while enabling early identification and management of musculoskeletal concerns.

For wheelchair athletes, particular attention is required because of the repetitive and high-load demands placed on the upper limbs and trunk through wheelchair propulsion, transfers, maneuvering, and sport-specific activities. A structured physiotherapy approach can help athletes better understand their physical requirements, identify potential risk factors, and develop strategies to participate more safely and confidently.

NRF’s involvement in the tournament reflects its commitment to evidence-based, athlete-centred rehabilitation and inclusive sports physiotherapy, with a specific focus on addressing the functional and musculoskeletal needs of wheelchair users.

The collaboration between NRF and Umoya Sports demonstrates the value of multidisciplinary partnerships in strengthening the ecosystem of adaptive sports in India. Integrating physiotherapy and rehabilitation services into sporting events can contribute to creating safer, more supportive, and athlete-focused sporting environments.

The Neuroaid & Research Foundation congratulates all participating athletes, winning teams, organisers, officials, volunteers, and support personnel for their contribution towards making the Ultimate Wheelchair Frisbee Tournament 2026 a successful and meaningful platform for advancing inclusive and adaptive sports in India.
